In August of 2021 we witnessed the largest airlift of civilian refugee population in history to the West (USA, Canada, Europe and Australia), prompted by collapse of Afghan government in Kabul. This website is designed for Afghans in Northern California.
Many Afghans who came to United States, wanted to come to California. The temperate weather of California is appealing to Afghans, along with a sizeable population of Afghans in the state. However, refugee resources in California was overwhelmed and they stopped accepting new Afghans.
Afghans in other states can still come to California, however, they cannot expect help from refugee agencies. For example, Opening Doors and IRC have turned down Afghan refugees who walk into their office. They are told that they cannot accept any more refugees. If you want to come to California, you can but you will need to be willing to work. There are many jobs that welcome Afghans, even if you don't speak english e.g. hotels. If you are picky about what you want to do, then it is better to go to a state that you are assigned e.g. East Coast or Midwest. If you are willing to get a job, there are government programs that would give discount for housing e.g. 50% off regular rent. Critically, you would need someone who is willing to host you until you get a job and housing e.g. about 2 months.
